The ‘white-labeled’ Portal Powers a Competitive Edge, Allowing Users Access to a Range of Online Resources
Edison, NJ: Iris Software has designed and implemented a novel portal for Energy Edge, a Pennsylvania-based company that helps its customer base of local energy suppliers dramatically enhance operating efficiencies and customer satisfaction levels. For Energy Edge, this online portal called as the Energy Engine has now emerged as a key differentiator and provides it a formidable competitive edge in its marketplace.
Energizing a Marketplace
The Energy Engine connects energy retailers with their downstream consumers. Those retail users are typically residential and small-business consumers of energy including gas, heating oil and propane.
Energy Edge’s customers use the online portal’s various tools to better empower their retail users browse and shop for quotations; project and plan their energy consumption and expenditures; facilitate e-commerce features like billing and payments; and requisition emergency energy services. The portal also enables better customer relationship management for Energy Edge’s customers.
Iris designed and implemented this portal from concept-to-launch. The key challenges for Iris were to design a “white labeled” portal where multiple customers could tap into a common set of online functionalities to achieve a consistent and predictable user experience. Iris employed cloud computing technology to provide the required features in a scalable, software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. Energy Edge currently offers the portal’s features to its customers in the U.S. Northeast, and plans to roll it out in other markets over time.
Energy Edge has been able to build a loyal customer base with this model since it offers them a number of features that helps them conduct their business smoothly. The portal has been designed to multiple businesses to maintain their unique brand and personal relationships as well as employ many marketing tools to develop and growing their clientele. The SaaS model gives them access to high-end technology infrastructure that they would find prohibitively expensive to create and maintain on their own.
The Design Grammar for a Complex Project
Iris designed the portal after validation of requirements with Energy Edge and its early adopters. It factored in several crucial non-functional requirements such as Energy Edge’s responsibility to keep the portal available 24/7, maintain data records of business transacted on the portal over long periods of time, and provide security features for the proprietary data of each business and its consumers.
Iris implemented the project with a dedicated team of project managers, software architects, database and user interface designers, testers, quality assurance executives and documentation personnel. Before launch, it ran the portal in a controlled test environment to ensure that the on-line businesses worked well in a live production environment.
