How Synthes Uses RFID to Manage Distribution Center Processes

Loaner Processing, Just-in-time Delivery, Superior Compliance, Faster Turnarounds Spur Big Savings

Edison, N.J.: Iris Software has designed and deployed an RFID-based "Sense-and-Response" solution for medical device manufacturer Synthes of West Chester, PA. On May 15, 2012, Iris and Synthes conducted a Webinar to share their experience, engagement, and business benefits of this deployment.

Synthes is employing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to manage inventory at both the item and case levels. Each surgical kit has numerous parts. By using RFID, Synthes' Distribution Center is able to rapidly & accurately perform inventory counts during the Shipping, Receiving, Audit and Put-Away processes; Speed & accuracy in these processes allows for rapid replenishment of returning Loaners/Surgical Kits.

At each stage of the Distribution Center's processes, Synthes is able to confirm that the proper item has been placed within each kit. When a surgical kit is returned to the distribution center, shop-floor personnel can quickly conduct inventory and invoice the hospital for any used items.

By RFID-enabling these DC processes—shipping, receiving, auditing and replenishment—Synthes has saved more than 14,000 labor hours annually. The direct labor savings of six full-time equivalents alone provided a return on investment within 6 months. Additional benefit is increased throughput, which means no new facilities are required to accommodate a growing volume of surgical kits and sets.

Mike Diguglielmo, Vice President of Process Improvement, Synthes and Anil Sanagavarapu, Director – RFID Practice, Iris Software presented the case study to an audience of over 200 attendees over a Webinar hosted by RFID Journal ( http://www.rfidjournal.com/), the world's first independent media company devoted solely to radio frequency identification and its many business applications.

Topics covered at the Webinar included –
A. Synthes' level of engagement with Iris
B. Iris' roles & responsibilities as a value-added software and solution provider
C. Iris' Sense & Response application's features and capabilities
D. Business benefits and RoI along the following dimensions:
