Iris placed third in the ML competition at NATC 2017
Noida, India:: Iris Software
finished third in a field of 50 teams from many corporates and academia
in a Machine Learning competition held by the premier Software Industry
association, NASSCOM, in New Delhi, India.
The event, NASSCOM Annual Technology
Conference 2017, ran a non-stop Hackathon with the theme: “Using Machine
Learning to make India Smarter” with the intent to provide insight to
the audience on how new disruptive technologies were being applied to
solve challenging problems in new, innovative ways. The 3-member Iris
team was placed 3rd from over a 150 participants from reputed IT
companies and academia across India.
In the 36-hour period, each team defined a
relevant problem area for India and applied machine learning principles
to build and demonstrate a working solution. Teams were open to use any
public dataset from Government websites, combine it with any other
public dataset or pseudo data, if required, to demonstrate their
solution. This whole exercise involved formulating the problem
statement, collecting data, creating the model architecture, developing a
solution and demonstration the same to the judges.
“The Iris team chose a common problem – ability to review the
innumerable Policies, Speeches, Articles, Reports, Schemes, Circulars
and Proceedings published by the Government every year – for quicker
assimilation and action”, explained team captain, Abhishek Gupta. The
team developed a “Semantics Based Extractive Summarizer” that quickly
delivered quality abstracts with emphasis on facts over statistics. An
industry-standard model was employed and with refined learning
techniques, the team demonstrated how the solution delivered higher
quality summaries with speed over time.
