Iris Software Brings Sense & Response Gains at Synthes

Just-in-time Delivery, Superior Compliance, Faster Turnarounds Spur Big Savings

Edison, NJ: Iris Software has designed and implemented an RFID-based “Sense-and-Response” solution for medical devices maker Synthes of West Chester, PA.
The novel solution enables Synthes to –
  • Increased Level of Customer Service
  • Increase Inventory Accuracy & Visibility
  • Increased Productivity
  • Reduction In Labor Cost
  • Improve Depot Space Utilization
  • Real Time Reporting Capabilities
Quicker turns translate to bigger savings
Synthes develops and markets medical instruments, and implants. These implants are categorized into Trauma, Cranio-Maxillofacial (CMF), and Spine applications.
Increasingly, surgeons are relying on Synthes to supply all the instruments and implants needed for a surgery as a set. A set consists of implants of various sizes, multiple instruments and numerous other consumables. A subset of the sets’ contents gets used during surgery and the rest are returned to Synthes and the hospital is invoiced for the consumed items. For business efficiency, it is thus very important for Synthes to check what has been consumed, replenish the ‘loaner’ set and dispatch it for the next surgery in the shortest time possible.
Processes around receiving, auditing and replenishment are an area with significant opportunity to save costs and reduce turnaround times. Synthes’ Process Improvement personnel realized early on that exploiting constraints such as Sterilization presented significant opportunities to increase effective capacity of the Distribution center.
The RFID-based solution developed by Iris enables Synthes to affix RFID tags on kits that can withstand the sterilization processes. In addition, remote reading of such tags aids in faster replenishment and restocking, and faster audits.
The turnaround times in Receiving, Audit and Replenishment have improved dramatically. The Audit and Replenishment cycles now take as low as 60 minutes to complete.
Intangible benefits include total inventory visibility, enhanced quality hold capabilities, solid reporting functionality and enhanced Lot traceability.
